What is shingles? This is a type of skin rash caused by the Varicella zoster virus. This virus is the same virus that brings about chickenpox. After a person contacts the chickenpox virus, this virus still stays in our nervous system and may lay stagnant for many years. One might say they are completely free from this virus. Certain factors can "wake up" the virus that has been hibernating in our system. These factors are emotional stress, deficiency in our immune system such as that caused by AIDS and even cancer. The reactivation of this virus causes this condition.
