A sinus infection is normally caused by a viral infection and this is why often antibiotics for sinus infection are needed. If a sinus infection goes untreated, it can last eight weeks or more. An acute sinus infection is one that lasts up to eight weeks or one that comes on approximately three times per year and lasts for only ten days. Sinus infections that last longer than eight weeks or come on more than three times per year and last in increments of approximately ten days are considered chronic sinus infections. Both types of sinus infections can be treated with prescription antibiotics. While a sinus infection has similar attributes as a cold or allergy would, it normally lasts longer and often takes antibiotics to make it completely go away. Without the antibiotics, a sinus infection may lay dormant for awhile and then return.
